I am so confused…Is it Muffuletta, or is it Muffaletta? What I do know is that Central Grocery in New Orleans is famous for its Muffulettas and should be the ultimate judge. They started selling Muffulettas back in 1906 and they declare that they are the creators of the Muffuletta. So who am I to disagree? Muffuletta it is!
I decided to use the olive spread that they use on their sandwiches,
What Goes Into a Muffuletta Sandwich
There are so many versions of this sandwich out there. Most of the versions are consistent in that they all include various types of deli meat and cheeses. My version of the muffuletta is no exception and includes various types of ham, salami, and mortadella. The sandwich is topped with an olive spread of pickled vegetables and olives.
The type of bread used is also very important. An Italian round bread loaf is typically used in making a Muffuletta. Tough to find in my part of the woods, so I am using a French-style bread.
UPDATE: I recently made a Muffuletta using focaccia for my bread. Focaccia is a great, light bread that works well. Give it a try if you have a hard time finding the bread you want! Check here for my recipe for focaccia!
You may be able to find Central Grocery’s Olive Spread at your local Italian Grocery Store. You can probably find Giardiniera at your local market if you don’t feel like making your own spread. Just cut up some of your favorite green olives and add some capers to the Giardiniera and you will be golden!!
One thing to remember is to let your sandwich sit for a while so that the juices of the olive spread can soak into the bread. This helps to flavor the sandwich. The bottom line is that you are going to love it! The Muffuletta is definitely near the top of the list on my all-time top ten sandwiches! (Pastrami, Italian beef dip, Blt, Pulled pork, Lobster roll, Open-faced Chili size, Cuban sandwich, Lox and Bagel, Chicken and waffle, and of course the Muffuletta!)
Enjoy! And as always, thanks for Spending Time in My Kitchen!
